A Challenge it was!

The Arctic Winter Challenge (AWC) took place last winter in Rovaniemi, Finland. The event was organised by both Dutch and Finnish scouts and in total there were 20 scouts present. The event was partly funded by the European Unions Youth programme. During the AWC our diffrence in scouting culture were the main theme which the activities followed. The event lasted for 9 days and in those days we had a lot of fun and formed many new friendships.

Cultural diffrences

Eventhough we both have a "North-Western-European" culture there were some differences betheen Finnish and Dutch. During the event many of these differences came up and we discussed about then to gain a better understanding. Both scouting cultures differed a lot, due to the diffrent climate, environment and cultural background, it was a very interesting thing to learn about this and also to realize what your own background is. The way we learned about each others culture was a very natural way, just by doing activities together you start asking questions, and these questions lead to new insights, it was a lot of fun.

Climate

The Arctic climate was a real challenge (at least for the Dutch ;), skiing to get from A to B, making snow caves, digging holes in the ice and even making a "freezing" bath-tub! The activities allowed both groups to mingle and cooperate in a for scouts natural way. The temperatures were moderate for the Finnish winter, averaging around -15C. Snow was plentyfull and when the sun started shining it was really nice!
